Welcome to Catan

Kelly and I are playing Settlers of Catan for the first time. Well, maybe not the very first time. I think we both played once or twice at BYU when everyone else loved the game, and I think we both were thoroughly confused because everyone else already knew how to play to trounce the newbies without remorse.

So now we’re actually trying to learn. We’re using the Starting Set-up for Beginners, and we were really careful to match the example map exactly. We didn’t even let two mountains be in opposite places from each other. We even made them face the same way as in the picture.

We’re gonna be so good at this.

I’m still in the phase where I try to avoid playing as much as possible because I don’t really know how to play and the two times I did play I got trounced and it wasn’t much fun because everyone else was good and I wasn’t. Maybe you have inspired me to learn how to play…of course that would mean putting down almost $50 to buy the game.

This first night when I wrote this Kelly and I didn’t get past setting up the board and reading the instructions before we had to call it a night. Another night we tried it again and eventually called it a draw and put it away. The third time we tried we actually finished a game, but it still took us two nights to do it.

I think it helped that neither of knew what we were doing, so no one got trounced. It seems like trouncing makes for a bad learning curve.
